Along the route stood one single acacia tree, the only living thing in an ocean of sand. This was the most isolated tree in the world, 100 miles from any other.

This acacia, known simply as The Tree of Ténéré, was the last surviving plant from a time when the desert was less parched than it is today, thanks to roots reaching deep down into a water pocket, an underground pool hidden more than 30 meters below the desert. It’s easy to see how the Tuareg caravan riders, themselves desert survival specialists, held the tree and its amazing fortitude in the highest regard. It was considered blasphemy to break its branches for firewood or let the camels eat from the leaves.

This loneliest tree in the world was one of the few landmarks along the Azalai, a sacred testament to the resilience of life that had guided caravans for centuries. Gum acacia, a syrup made from acacia sap, provides sugary sweetness balanced by salty amber and incense. The demand for silphium eventually became so overwhelming that it was harvested to extinction, and the taste and smell of the spice was regretfully lost over time.

Here, Stora Skuggan has recreated the scent of silphium through research, ingenuity, hard work, and a touch of sorcery. On first spritz we get a blast of rosy, ultra-fem geranium, along with something bright and unidentifiable – perhaps that silphium accord? It’s tart, zesty and fleeting, and is quickly subsumed by a peppery, clean scent; a spicy soapy smell that’s distinctly masculine. It’s a dynamic fragrance – boyish and girlish, warmish and coolish, spicy and fresh.
